You’ve already learned how to be a therapist. Now learn how to guide, evaluate, and support the next generation of marriage and family therapists. Our online, self-paced course provides 30 contact hours of training in supervision, one of the paths Maine offers LMFTs to become a board-approved supervisor, with practical tools you’ll use in real supervision.
Kate Walker Training has offered supervisor training since 2006, when Dr. Kate Walker, PhD, LPC-S, LMFT-S, began teaching it with Dr. Judy DeTrude. Kate Walker Training is an NBCC Approved Continuing Education Provider (ACEP No. 7040).
In Maine, supervision for LMFT licensure must be provided by a supervisor approved by the Board of Counseling Professionals Licensure. Under the board’s rules (02-514 CMR ch. 4, §4(3)), the supervisor must hold a qualifying license, such as LMFT, LCPC, or LCSW, that is not under suspension or probation, and must not be related to, living with, or in a personal relationship with the supervisee.
The supervisor must also meet one of three criteria: five years of licensed practice (with no more than two years as an entry-level conditional licensee); certification by a national professional organization in training or supervision; or 30 contact hours of training in supervision plus at least one year of licensed practice above the entry-level conditional level.
This course provides the 30 contact hours for that third path. You apply to the board for supervisor approval, and the board makes the final decision.
Review the current rules and supervision forms on the board’s Licensing and Forms page.

"The ability to reach out and talk with Kate and the optional weekly Study Halls... The content really made you think about what you would do and the best way to approach your job as gatekeeper for the profession. I also liked the fact that once completed, I had a supervision contract and a document that I can use for orientation of new supervisees."

Maine’s counselor rules (02-514 CMR ch. 2 and ch. 3) give LPC and LCPC supervisors the same three paths, including 30 contact hours of training in supervision. Our 45-hour Approved Clinical Supervisor (ACS) training covers that training requirement.
It also counts toward the ACS credential, which the board’s rules give as an example of a national certification in supervision. The training is one part of ACS eligibility, and the Center for Credentialing & Education (CCE) issues the credential after you apply and meet its remaining requirements.

Licensed mental health professionals, including LMFTs, can take this course. Your certificate doesn't expire.
To be approved by the Maine board as an LMFT supervisor through the 30-hour path, you also need:
A full, active qualifying Maine license that is not under suspension or probation
At least one year of licensed practice above the entry-level conditional level
No family, household, or personal relationship with the supervisee
Once you meet these requirements, you apply to the Maine Board of Counseling Professionals Licensure. The board makes the final decision on supervisor approval.
