You’ve already learned how to be a therapist. Now learn how to guide, evaluate, and support the next generation of counselors. Our online, self-paced course provides the 20 hours of continuing education in clinical supervision Virginia requires for LPCs and LMFTs who supervise residents, with practical tools you’ll use in real supervision.
Kate Walker Training has offered supervisor training since 2006, when Dr. Kate Walker, PhD, LPC-S, LMFT-S, began teaching it with Dr. Judy DeTrude. Kate Walker Training is an NBCC Approved Continuing Education Provider (ACEP No. 7040).
Under 18VAC115-20-52 (residents in counseling) and 18VAC115-50-60 (residents in marriage and family therapy), a supervisor must hold an active, unrestricted license as a professional counselor or marriage and family therapist where supervision is provided, and must have professional training in supervision: three graduate credit hours (4.0 quarter hours) in supervision, or at least 20 hours of continuing education in supervision from an approved provider. The National Board for Certified Counselors is on Virginia’s list of approving organizations.
The rules also require two years of post-licensure experience: clinical experience to supervise residents in counseling, or marriage and family therapy experience to supervise residents in marriage and family therapy. At least 100 of a resident’s 200 supervision hours must come from a supervisor in the resident’s own profession.
This course provides the 20 hours of continuing education in supervision. You remain responsible for meeting the board’s license and experience requirements before you supervise.
Review the current rule in the Virginia Board of Counseling supervisor information page.

"The ability to reach out and talk with Kate and the optional weekly Study Halls... The content really made you think about what you would do and the best way to approach your job as gatekeeper for the profession. I also liked the fact that once completed, I had a supervision contract and a document that I can use for orientation of new supervisees."
LaTonya Hendricks, course graduate, April 2023
