What Texas Requires to Become an LPC-S or LMFT-S

LPC Supervisor (LPC-S): According to the Texas Behavioral Health Executive Council (Texas’s BHEC), you need an unrestricted LPC license in good standing for at least five years and a 40-clock-hour supervisor training course (or a doctoral-level course in supervision). Review the current requirements on the BHEC’s LPC Supervisor page.

LMFT Supervisor (LMFT-S): According to Texas’s BHEC, you need a Texas LMFT in good standing, at least 3,000 hours of independent LMFT practice over a minimum of three years, and one of three training options: a 40-hour continuing education course in clinical supervision, an AAMFT-approved Fundamentals of Supervision course, or a 3-semester-hour graduate course in MFT supervision. Review the current requirements on the BHEC’s LMFT Supervisor page.

Under 22 TAC §681.147 and §801.143(m), the 40-hour course must be taught by a licensee with supervisor status, completed within 90 days, and cover five content areas with minimum hours in each. This course covers all five, with hours at or above each minimum.

You apply to the BHEC for supervisor status, and the board makes the final decision.

How This Course Prepares You to Supervise

Most clinicians starting supervisor training feel some version of this:

  • Unsure where to start or which tools to use with a first supervisee
  • Worried about winging it without a clear structure for evaluation and feedback
  • Wondering whether a course will prepare you for real situations, like a supervisee who is struggling
In-person vs online clinical supervisor training comparison

  • Tools you'll use with real supervisees
You'll finish with a supervision contract, step-by-step guidance for building your supervision plan, and a remediation plan template, plus guidance on recruiting and onboarding supervisees.
  • A plan for every budget
Basic, Pro, and Elite share the same 40-hour course. The higher plans add continuing education, resources, and ongoing support after you graduate.
  • Confidence to lead
Many new supervisors start out unsure. The course gives you a structured framework for evaluation, feedback, and difficult conversations, so you're prepared when supervision gets complicated.
  • Support after you graduate
Supervision can feel isolating at first. Pro and Elite graduates have community and ongoing support, so you have people to ask during your first year of supervising.

What to Look for in a Texas Supervisor Training

Texas’s BHEC sets the standards for the 40-hour course and leaves it to you to choose a provider. Questions worth asking any provider:

  • Does the course cover all five content areas in 22 TAC §681.147 and §801.143(m), with the minimum hours in each?
  • Is the instructor a licensee with supervisor status, as the rules require?
  • How does the provider track the 90-day completion window?
  • Will you leave with practical documents and templates you can use with supervisees?
  • Is multicultural supervision covered throughout the course?
  • Does it cover the practical side of supervising, like recruiting and onboarding supervisees?
  • What support is available during the course and after you graduate?
  • Does it include continuing education you may need after you become a supervisor?

Plan Around Texas’s 90-Day Rule

Texas’s rules require you to complete the 40-hour course within 90 days. Your 90-day window starts when you purchase the course (or activate your voucher), so if you aren’t eligible for supervisor status yet, it’s worth waiting to purchase until you’re ready to finish within 90 days.

Life happens. If you don’t finish in 90 days, the course is still yours. We never take it away, and you can keep working on it for CEs. Because the same course can’t be purchased twice, you would wait for our next updated 40-hour course (we release new courses annually) to try again for the supervisor designation.

Am I Eligible to Take This Course?

Licensed mental health professionals, including LPCs and LMFTs, can take this course. Once you complete it, your certificate doesn't expire.

To apply for supervisor status in Texas, you also need:

LPC-S: An unrestricted Texas LPC license in good standing for at least five years

LMFT-S: A Texas LMFT in good standing, with at least 3,000 hours of independent practice over at least three years

Course completion within 90 days of purchase or voucher activation

Once you meet these requirements, you apply to Texas’s BHEC, which makes the final decision on supervisor status.

Support While You Complete the Course

Every plan includes the full 40-hour course, which provides 40 NBCC CE hours and 40 supervisor CE hours.

You'll have access to an instructor every step of the way:

  • Weekly live virtual study hall with instructors and curriculum specialists (all plans)
  • Fast-track grading (Elite plan)

The course is built around real supervision situations, so what you learn is what you'll use.

Frequently Asked Questions

If I finish this program, am I automatically a supervisor?

No. This course provides the 40-hour supervisor training course Texas requires. To earn the LPC-S or LMFT-S, you meet the board’s remaining requirements, apply, and pay any applicable fees. Texas’s BHEC makes the final decision.

Is this course approved by the Texas LPC and LMFT boards?

Texas’s BHEC doesn’t approve or keep a list of 40-hour supervisor courses. Instead, the rules set the standards: the course is taught by a licensee with supervisor status, completed within 90 days, and covers five content areas with minimum hours. This course is designed to meet each of those standards under 22 TAC §681.147 and §801.143(m).

How long do I have to complete the course?

Texas’s rules require you to complete the 40-hour course within 90 days. Your 90-day window starts when you purchase the course (or activate your voucher if someone else purchased it for you).

What happens if I don’t finish in 90 days?

The course is still yours. We never take it away, and you can keep working on it for CEs. Your certificate will show your start and completion dates, and a course completed after 90 days can’t be used for the supervisor designation. Because the same course can’t be purchased twice, you would wait for our next updated 40-hour course (we release new courses annually) to try again.

I’m not eligible for supervisor status yet. Should I buy the course now?

We recommend waiting until you can finish within 90 days. Once you complete the course within that window, your certificate doesn’t expire, so you can finish it before you’re eligible and submit it when you apply.

I’m an LMFT. Is this the only training option?

No. Texas’s BHEC accepts a 40-hour continuing education course in clinical supervision, an AAMFT-approved Fundamentals of Supervision course, or a 3-semester-hour graduate course in MFT supervision. This course is the 40-hour option.

How many CE hours does this course provide?

Participants who complete all requirements receive a certificate showing 40 NBCC CE hours and 40 supervisor CE hours, including 15 ethics, 4 technology, and 5 multicultural hours. Kate Walker Training courses fulfill the Texas LPC and LMFT rules requiring that 50% of continuing education courses come from a designated provider type.

Can you guarantee the board will approve me as a supervisor?

No. Texas’s BHEC has final say. If you are missing experience or transferring from another state, the board may have additional requirements, and rule updates can change what the board requires.

This course is online but do I ever get to talk to an instructor and ask questions?

Yes. Instructors and curriculum specialists attend a weekly live virtual study hall on Zoom, where you can ask questions and talk through course concepts. This is included with every plan.

Are there payment plans?

Yes. Payment plans are available for every plan and are built into checkout. Just choose the payment plan option when you enroll.

What payment methods do you accept?

We accept major credit cards, Amazon Pay, Link, Apple Pay, and Google Pay.

If I don't finish the entire 40 hours, can I get partial CE credit?

No. You will receive one completion certificate when the entire course and all assignments are finished and approved.

What do I do with my certificate once I finish?

Keep the original for your records. For the LPC-S, the BHEC asks you to attach the certificate to your online application or email it to counseling@bhec.texas.gov. For the LMFT-S, submit your completion certificate with your application, following the BHEC’s current instructions.
